Wokeness Analysis
The 2022 Netflix Resident Evil series prominently features race-swapped casting of the iconic white villain Albert Wesker as a Black man played by Lance Reddick, alongside his two mixed-race or Black daughters as the central protagonists in a story that contrasts their arrival in an 'ultra-white' company town. This reimagining draws explicit attention to racial dynamics, with dialogue and visuals highlighting a lack of diversity in New Raccoon City and positioning the Black family as outsiders disrupting a sterile, Caucasian environment. Additional elements include a lesbian CEO antagonist Evelyn Marcus whose sexuality is noted but secondary to her villainy, vegan and animal-rights activist teen heroines who criticize experiments and corporate greed, and Gen Z-style commentary on social issues. While the core plot revolves around Umbrella Corporation conspiracies and the T-virus apocalypse across dual timelines, these identity-focused changes and messaging feel deliberately inserted to modernize the franchise, often at the expense of fidelity to the source material's characters and tone. Conservative critics and audience scores reflect backlash against the forced diversity, empowerment of young female leads over traditional heroes, and subtle digs at traditional or white-centric settings, making the ideology a significant driver rather than organic flavor. Entertainment suffers as plot and characters serve these representational goals, leading to perceptions of agenda-driven storytelling in a horror-action series.
Plot
The Netflix series follows the Wesker family across two timelines. In 2022, teenage sisters Jade and Billie move with their father Albert to New Raccoon City, a planned community run by the Umbrella Corporation. The girls uncover dark secrets about their father's work on experimental drugs derived from the T-virus. Flash-forward to 2036, survivor Jade navigates a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies and monsters while hunted by Umbrella forces, piecing together family betrayals and corporate plots that led to global catastrophe. The eight-episode season blends horror, action, and mystery with original story elements using game lore as backstory.
