- Depiction of anti-miscegenation laws and interracial relationship struggles
- Critiques of corporate greed and land theft framed through historical grievances
Wokeness Analysis
The series prominently features extended storylines centered on the brutal treatment of Indigenous children in Catholic-run boarding schools, with graphic depictions of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse aimed at forced assimilation and cultural erasure. This narrative arc, centered on the Crow character Teonna Rainwater, is presented as a visceral critique of systemic racism and institutional power, drawing explicit parallels to contemporary injustices in some analyses. Additional elements include portrayals of anti-miscegenation laws separating an interracial couple and critiques of corporate greed, land grabbing, and environmental exploitation tied to early 20th-century progressivism. While the core Dutton family storyline emphasizes traditional values like self-reliance, family loyalty, and resistance to external threats, the intentional focus on marginalized group suffering and historical grievances often feels prioritized to deliver social commentary. Conservative viewers have noted the show's popularity despite these elements, viewing it as entertainment undermined by agenda-driven subplots that overshadow escapism. The messaging supports plot but frequently draws attention through its intensity and framing, leading many to perceive it as message-driven rather than purely narrative-focused.
Plot
1923 follows a new generation of the Dutton family in Montana during the early 20th century. Patriarch Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and matriarch Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) battle drought, Prohibition, cattle theft, and threats to their ranch from sheepherders and ambitious outsiders. Parallel storylines include nephew Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) returning from adventures abroad and the harrowing experiences of young Crow woman Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves) escaping abuse at a Catholic boarding school. The series explores survival, family legacy, and conflicts over land amid the lead-up to the Great Depression. It premiered on Paramount+ on December 18, 2022.
