Wokeness Analysis
Witchboard (1986) is a straightforward supernatural horror film centered on a college student who becomes possessed after using an Ouija board, or witchboard, during a party. The narrative revolves around a love triangle between the protagonist Linda, her fiancé Jim, and her ex-boyfriend Brandon, combined with escalating supernatural terror from a malevolent spirit named Malfeitor. Released in the mid-1980s, the movie adheres to classic horror tropes of the era, including possession, progressive entrapment by a demonic entity, and warnings against dabbling in the occult. There are no elements of progressive social or political messaging, no intentional representation of marginalized groups beyond standard casting of the time, and no social commentary or indoctrination themes. The story prioritizes plot-driven scares, character relationships in a conventional heterosexual context, and escapist entertainment typical of 1980s horror. Any modern reinterpretations, such as readings of homosocial tension between the male leads, are retrospective fan analyses rather than deliberate messaging by the filmmakers. The film focuses entirely on story, characters, and fun horror elements without any ideological overlay. As a product of its time, it avoids contemporary progressive frameworks entirely, delivering pure genre escapism.
Plot
In Witchboard (1986), college student Linda Brewster and her fiancé Jim host a party where Linda's ex-boyfriend Brandon introduces an Ouija board to contact a benign spirit. Instead, they summon the malevolent ghost of serial killer Carlos Malfeitor, who begins terrorizing and possessing Linda through progressive entrapment. As the supernatural events escalate, involving hauntings, violence, and a battle against the entity, the characters confront both the occult dangers and their personal relationships in this supernatural horror tale.
