Wokeness Analysis
The Penguin (2024) is a straightforward crime drama centered on power struggles in Gotham's underworld, with no discernible progressive messaging or social commentary injected into the narrative. The story follows Oswald Cobb's ruthless ascent through betrayal, violence, and ambition, drawing heavily from classic mobster tropes like those in The Sopranes without any overlay of identity politics or lectures on inequality. Cast diversity, including Hispanic actor Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar and female lead Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, appears as natural casting for the roles rather than deliberate inclusion efforts, and these elements serve the plot organically without emphasis on race, gender, or systemic issues. The series maintains a dark, violent tone focused on character motivations and criminal intrigue, avoiding any didactic themes about marginalized groups or modern social justice. Conservative viewers frustrated by forced wokeness in recent media will find this production refreshing in its commitment to traditional storytelling and entertainment value over ideology. Production details confirm an emphasis on gritty realism and character-driven drama, with no evidence of activist agendas shaping the script or themes. Overall, the show prioritizes escapism through its crime saga, aligning with audience expectations for unapologetic villain-focused content.
Plot
Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oswald 'Oz' Cobb, known as the Penguin, schemes to take control of Gotham City's criminal empire after the death of his boss Carmine Falcone. As a mid-level mobster, Oz recruits young Victor Aguilar as his driver and ally while navigating rivalries with the remaining Falcone family, particularly Sofia Falcone fresh from Arkham Asylum. The eight-episode miniseries explores Oz's ruthless climb through double-crosses, new drug ventures, and brutal power plays in a gritty, post-flood Gotham underworld. Starring Colin Farrell in heavy prosthetics as the Penguin, alongside Cristin Milioti and Rhenzy Feliz, the show blends psychological depth with mob drama elements reminiscent of classic crime stories.
