Wokeness Analysis
Ride Along (2014) is a straightforward buddy-cop action comedy centered on entertainment, humor, and character dynamics without any progressive social or political messaging, indoctrination, or forced social commentary. The plot revolves around a high-school security guard attempting to prove himself to his girlfriend's tough police officer brother during a chaotic ride-along that escalates into a criminal pursuit. Casting features prominent Black leads Kevin Hart and Ice Cube in a natural, organic pairing typical of the genre, with supporting roles including diverse actors like Tika Sumpter, John Leguizamo, and Laurence Fishburne, but these elements serve the story and comedy rather than advancing any ideological agenda. There are no themes of systemic issues, identity politics, representation quotas, or moral lectures on race, gender, or society. Minor nods to racial stereotypes appear only as comedic fodder within the buddy dynamic, fully integrated without drawing attention or pushing narratives. Reviews and analyses confirm the film prioritizes slapstick violence, rapid-fire banter, and escapist fun over any messaging, aligning with traditional entertainment values. No evidence from contemporary sources indicates intent to indoctrinate or comment on contemporary social issues; it remains a product of pre-2010s Hollywood focused on broad appeal and box-office success.
Plot
High-school security guard and video-game enthusiast Ben Barber seeks to marry his girlfriend Angela but must first win approval from her no-nonsense brother, Atlanta police detective James Payton. James agrees to let Ben join him on a 24-hour ride-along through the city's tough neighborhoods, intending to scare the rookie into backing out. What begins as a test of manhood spirals into a high-stakes chase after they cross paths with a notorious criminal kingpin, forcing the unlikely pair to team up against arms smugglers and gangsters. Starring Kevin Hart as the fast-talking Ben and Ice Cube as the intimidating James, with Tika Sumpter as Angela, the film delivers non-stop action-comedy antics amid car chases, shootouts, and verbal sparring.
