Wokeness Analysis
Norbit is a broad, crude comedy from 2007 centered on Eddie Murphy's triple role as the timid orphan Norbit, his domineering obese wife Rasputia, and the Chinese orphanage owner Mr. Wong. The plot follows Norbit's escape from an abusive marriage to reunite with his childhood sweetheart Kate while thwarting a scheme to turn the orphanage into a strip club. Released in an era before heavy progressive messaging dominated Hollywood, the film contains no political lectures, identity politics, or social justice themes. Instead, it relies on slapstick, physical humor, stereotypes played for laughs, and escapist romance. Critics at the time condemned its racial and body-size stereotypes as offensive, but these elements serve pure comedic exaggeration rather than any ideological agenda. There are no attempts to promote diversity, challenge norms in a progressive way, or comment on systemic issues. The story prioritizes entertainment through outrageous characters and situations, with no forced messaging about representation or indoctrination. Modern viewers critical of wokeness appreciate its unapologetic, pre-PC style that avoids pandering to contemporary sensitivities.
Plot
Abandoned as a baby, Norbit grows up in a Chinese restaurant and orphanage run by Mr. Wong. He befriends Kate as a child before she is adopted. Years later, the overweight and abusive Rasputia rescues young Norbit from bullies and later forces him into marriage with help from her thuggish brothers. When Kate returns to town to buy the orphanage, Norbit schemes to escape his miserable life and expose a plot by Rasputia, her brothers, and Kate's shady fiancé to convert the orphanage into a strip club. With help from colorful allies, Norbit stands up for himself, saves the day, and reunites with Kate.
