Wokeness Analysis
Finch (2021) is a straightforward post-apocalyptic survival tale centered on Tom Hanks as Finch Weinberg, a robotics engineer who constructs a robot named Jeff to care for his dog Goodyear after his impending death. The narrative unfolds as a road trip across a desolate American West, emphasizing themes of companionship, legacy, trust, and what it means to be human through Finch's efforts to teach the robot basic life lessons, humor, and empathy. There is no political messaging, no emphasis on identity politics, diversity quotas, or social justice narratives. The cast features primarily white male leads with the dog as a central emotional anchor, and any inclusion feels incidental rather than agenda-driven. Reviews highlight its charm, sentimentality, and family-friendly focus on friendship and hope without injecting contemporary cultural commentary. Conservative-leaning perspectives appreciate its traditional values of personal responsibility, ingenuity, and emotional bonds over ideological lectures. The story prioritizes escapism and character-driven drama in a classic sci-fi vein reminiscent of older films, avoiding any forced representation or indoctrination. Overall, it delivers pure entertainment rooted in universal human experiences rather than progressive social engineering.
Plot
In a post-apocalyptic world devastated by a solar flare that destroyed the ozone layer, leaving Earth a scorched wasteland with extreme radiation and temperatures, Tom Hanks plays Finch Weinberg, a reclusive robotics engineer surviving alone in an underground bunker with his loyal dog Goodyear. Diagnosed with a terminal illness, Finch builds a humanoid robot to protect and care for the dog after his death. Naming himself Jeff, the robot learns about life, love, friendship, and human values during a perilous cross-country journey through the American West. The film explores their evolving bond, humorous mishaps, and poignant moments as Finch imparts wisdom, ultimately questioning what defines humanity in a world stripped of civilization.
