Wokeness Analysis
Big Hero 6 presents a story centered on grief, friendship, and using intelligence for good in a futuristic blend of San Francisco and Tokyo called San Fransokyo. The diverse cast includes Asian-American protagonist Hiro, voiced by Ryan Potter, along with other team members like the strong female characters Go Go and Honey Lemon who contribute to the plot through their skills in engineering and chemistry. These elements reflect natural inclusion in a modern animated film rather than forced messaging. The film avoids heavy-handed social commentary, focusing instead on Hiro's personal journey from underground robot fights to forming a superhero team after his brother's death. While praised by some for its multicultural setting and female representation in STEM roles, these aspects integrate organically into the action-adventure without dominating the narrative or delivering lectures on identity. Conservative critiques note that the diversity feels somewhat performative for its time but remains subtle and secondary to the entertaining plot of battling a villain and honoring family. Overall, the movie prioritizes escapism and character development over ideological agendas, making it a mild example of contemporary sensibilities in Disney animation.
Plot
In the futuristic city of San Fransokyo, 14-year-old robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada competes in illegal robot fights until his older brother Tadashi introduces him to the tech university. After Tadashi dies in a fire, Hiro discovers Baymax, a healthcare robot built by his brother, and teams up with university friends Go Go, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, and Fred to form Big Hero 6. Together they uncover a conspiracy involving a masked villain and use their inventions to fight crime while Hiro processes his grief. The film combines heartfelt emotion, inventive action sequences, and humor as the team learns the value of teamwork and using technology responsibly.
