Wokeness Analysis
Batman and Harley Quinn (2017) is a straightforward DC animated adventure centered on a classic buddy-cop style plot where Batman and Nightwing reluctantly team up with Harley Quinn to thwart Poison Ivy and Floronic Man's eco-terrorist scheme to turn humanity into plant hybrids. The story prioritizes action, humor, and character interactions drawn from the Batman: The Animated Series aesthetic, with no overt progressive messaging, identity politics, or social commentary on race, gender, or systemic issues. Harley Quinn is portrayed in her traditional comic-book form as a chaotic, sexualized anti-heroine with slapstick antics and a budding romantic/sexual tension with Nightwing, including an implied consensual encounter that critics on both sides noted as juvenile but not ideologically driven. Environmental themes exist only as the villains' motivation for world-ending extremism, serving plot tension rather than endorsing any real-world agenda. Voice cast and character designs reflect standard DC continuity without forced diversity insertions or representation quotas. Reviews highlight complaints about over-sexualization and crude humor but frame these as tonal misfires or fan-service, not attempts at indoctrination or messaging. The post-credits scene with Harley's reality show is pure comedic closure. Overall, the film delivers escapism and nostalgia without injecting contemporary political or cultural lectures, aligning closely with pre-2010s superhero animation norms.
Plot
In Batman and Harley Quinn (2017), Batman and Nightwing discover Poison Ivy and the Floronic Man (Jason Woodrue) plotting to unleash a virus that will transform humanity into plant hybrids, potentially wiping out life as we know it. To locate the villains, they enlist the help of a paroled Harley Quinn, who has been trying to go straight as a waitress. The unlikely trio embarks on a road-trip-style adventure filled with action, comedy, and tension as they track down Ivy's hideout in Louisiana. Harley’s unpredictable personality clashes with Batman’s stoicism while sparking chemistry with Nightwing. The heroes ultimately stop the plan, with Harley playing a key role before returning to civilian life. The 74-minute animated film, directed by Sam Liu with story by Bruce Timm, adopts the visual style of The New Batman Adventures and features voices including Kevin Conroy as Batman.
