Wokeness Analysis
Angel Has Fallen (2019) is a straightforward action thriller centered on Secret Service agent Mike Banning framed for an assassination attempt on President Allan Trumbull. The plot focuses on Banning evading capture, uncovering a conspiracy involving private military contractors and a corrupt vice president seeking profit through war with Russia, and protecting the president while reconciling with his estranged father. While the film features a Black president (Morgan Freeman) and supporting Black characters in authority roles like FBI Agent Helen Thompson (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Secret Service Director David Gentry (Lance Reddick), these elements appear as organic casting choices in a modern Hollywood production rather than deliberate ideological insertions. The story shifts from the series' prior xenophobic framing of foreign threats to domestic corporate greed, which some reviews note as a milder, less jingoistic approach, but this serves the conspiracy plot without pushing progressive social commentary, diversity lectures, or identity politics. Female characters like Banning's wife Leah have limited screen time and traditional supportive roles, with no emphasis on empowerment themes. No LGBTQ elements or heavy-handed messaging on race, gender, or systemic issues are present. The narrative prioritizes high-stakes action, personal loyalty, family reconciliation, and anti-corruption themes over any social agenda. Conservative-leaning critiques highlight it as an improvement over prior entries' overt nationalism but still a white male-led power fantasy with minimal intrusion from contemporary sensibilities. Overall, any diversity feels incidental to the entertainment-driven story rather than forced or message-driven.
Plot
Secret Service agent Mike Banning is framed for a drone attack on President Allan Trumbull during a fishing trip, leaving the president in a coma and Banning accused of treason with ties to Russia. Banning escapes custody and teams up with his reclusive father Clay to expose the real culprits: his former commander Wade Jennings, now head of a private military company, and Vice President Martin Kirby, who aim to profit from a war with Russia. Banning evades the FBI and his own agency while protecting his family and ultimately clearing his name to save the president and prevent unnecessary conflict.
