Wokeness Analysis
The 2023 comedy About My Father centers on a straightforward culture-clash story between a working-class Italian-American father and son and the wealthy WASP family of the son's girlfriend. The plot revolves around family dynamics, generational differences, work ethic, and the value of parental love and sacrifice during a Fourth of July weekend visit. Reviews consistently describe it as a lighthearted, stereotype-driven farce inspired by the lead actor's stand-up routines, with emphasis on humor from contrasting lifestyles rather than any social or political agenda. One supporting character is noted as a caricature of a 'woke' hippie who mentions the country club's slave-labor history, but this serves as minor comedic exaggeration within the broader mockery of privileged excess and does not drive the narrative or deliver commentary. The film prioritizes escapism, heartwarming resolutions about family unity, and traditional values of hard work and respect for elders over any progressive messaging. Critics from various outlets highlight its avoidance of deeper class or racial analysis, focusing instead on affectionate stereotypes and relatable parent-child tensions. Overall, any modern elements feel incidental and organic to the comedy setup without intruding on the entertainment.
Plot
Sebastian Maniscalco plays a version of himself as a Chicago hotel manager planning to propose to his girlfriend Ellie during her wealthy family's Independence Day gathering at their Virginia estate. Reluctantly bringing along his old-school Sicilian immigrant father Salvo (Robert De Niro), a hairstylist, the weekend turns into a series of comedic clashes between the modest, hardworking Maniscalco family and Ellie's eccentric, privileged clan including a senator mother and hotel magnate father. Through misunderstandings, cultural differences, and heartfelt moments, both families learn to appreciate their quirks and the importance of family above all. The film draws from Maniscalco's real-life experiences and stand-up material for its humor.
